June 1983: David received MBA from New York University, where he wrote his Master’s Thesis on “Financing the Growth of High Tech Firms”.
June 1983: David began Wall Street career as an equity research analyst at Smith Barney in their Emerging Growth Group.
Summer 1983: Smith Barney sent David to meet with a young Bill Gates in Bellevue, Washington, largely because David was “not senior enough” to cover and visit IBM or Armonk.
March 1986: Oracle and Microsoft IPO within 4 days of each other: March 12 and March 16.
October 19, 1987: Black Monday.
1984-1990: David named Institutional Investor All-American team for Software & Services Sector research and David recognized as an Institutional Investor All-Star Ranked Analyst.
October 1989: David moved to San Francisco to build out West Coast Equity Technology Sector research practice for Shearson Lehman (Lehman Brothers).
August 1991: Sybase IPO on August 20. Lehman Brothers served as co-manager. First client/server database tech software company.
1992-1999: David joined and worked at Montgomery Securities as Partner & Senior Investment Analyst for Software Sector. Led Software and Internet Research practice.
April 1994: David hosted first major Internet Wall Street Conference: “The Information Highway 1995 & Beyond” from April 8-9. Bill Gates and John Malone were keynote speakers.
August 1995: Netscape IPO on August 9- signified beginning of “Internet 1.0”.
August 1995: Microsoft Windows ’95- launched on August 15 with no browser included.
December 1995: Bill Gates called urgent meeting in December and reships Windows ’95 with browser.
April 1996: Yahoo! IPO on April 11 with Montgomery Securities serving as Co-Manager. Leading Internet commerce site.
June 1996: Siebel Systems IPO on June 27. Montgomery Securities served as Co-Manager and the IPO represented the first enterprise-client/server software.
September 1998: Long-Term Capital Management collapsed on September 23.
November 1999: Glass-Steagall Act repealed.
November 1999: David co-founded Thomas Weisel Partners, a growth-equity focused merchant bank in San Francisco.
January 2000: AOL and Time-Warner merged on January 10 in $164B merger. David was quoted in Time Magazine (January 24), “The Nerds have won”.
April 2000: David wrote report, “Ode to a Great Growth Stock” following Microsoft’s antitrust lawsuit loss on April 3. The report was an analysis of Microsoft outlook following Microsoft anti-trust ruling.
June 2000: David publishes weekly internet research report, d.I.R.T.- dreaderman Internet Research Trends. “Internet Bubble” busts.
